Well this past weekend I went camping and thought that I would try my A.T. hybrid shelter which is rated at 400 lbs. as a hammock. I only tip the weight scale at a little over 188 lbs... You would think it was ok to use as a hammock well guess what it is not. This hammock did not rip down the middle but straight across from one seam to the other. Now I have owned other hammocks and have used other hammocks for camping so it's not as if I am new to hammock camping. I just thought that I would save myself some weight in the pack by having an all in one item like the A.T. hybrid shelter. I should have tried it at home before I went out with this thing and I would have not been sleeping in my truck that night only, to return home the next morning. What a waste of money. A couple of months later, today, in fact, after sitting in my office out of the sun, my daughter, a friend and I decided to pack it along on a short, 5 mile hike. While eating lunch, I set it up using high strength climbing rope, carabiners, and tree straps. My daughter got in the hammock and loved it. She weighs ~45 pounds. My friend got in the hammock and liked it. He weighs about 180 pounds. My daughter climbed in with my friend. 225 pounds were now in the hammock, which was designed to support 400 pounds. The hammock ripped right to left, and both my friend and my daughter slid to the ground. Neither had sharps on them. Neither had shoes on. Neither was being rambunctious. They were both lying in the hammock and The Grand Trunk turned into some bad funk.I hope to get something back from the company. I reached out to Grand Trunk today. We'll see. I don't want another of their "camping" hammocks. I will never trust them... It makes hammocking a breeze wherever you may be. You have to find your "sweet spot" to lie in it with the most comfort, but once you do it's great. You can even sit in it, or wrap yourself up in it to stay warm/dry. I do recommend purchasing some slap straps for ease of installation. |
